Watch Us Work & Learn!

A large part of the Extend 1 class is Occupational Prep. Over each student's time at Freedom they will take a total of 4 Occupational Prep classes. During these classes we will work on vocational and functional skills. We study the various careers, collaborate with Vocational Rehab., focus on the skills needed in the work force, and put those skills into practice. Another aspect of the Extend 1 classroom is gaining independence within our lives. We learn and practice the functional skills that foster our independence. We will be focusing on money knowledge, budgeting, shopping skills, cooking skills, reading labels, maintaining proper dress and hygiene and much more! Below are some areas in which we let our skills shine!

The Cafeteria

You will find us in the cafeteria every afternoon clocking into our hours. While in the cafeteria we will put into practice our cleaning skills. We will be washing each table, sweeping the floors, mopping, and helping with trash. This gives us the opportunity to learn about the proper usage of cleaning supplies and safe working conditions. We slo practice completing each task that is given to us by our superiors, in this case the lunch ladies!

Life Skills Apartment

Coming soon... we are working hard to create a life skills apartment that will allow for our student's to receive hands on experience! We will work on making a bed, folding, sorting and hanging clothes, setting a table, storing clothing, sweeping, vacuuming, cooking and so much more!!! Keep your eye out for updates.

Patriot Store

On Fridays during lunch you will find us outside of the cafeteria selling spirit wear to our classmates and teachers. We will be collaborating with the Booster club to sell all of their goods. We will be inventorying items, pricing items, totaling sales, creating change, counting money, identifying and sorting items and sizes, and not to mention socializing with all of our peers. Don't forget to stop by and grab a Freedom shirt!

Payroll

Who doesn't love earning money? Each day every student can earn up to $4.00 (school money). If negative behavior occurs or work is not completed money will be lost. At the end of the day when we complete our classroom jobs our "banker" will give everyone the money that they have earned throughout the day. On Fridays we will count the money in our wallets and will have the opportunity to buy privileges.  This is a great representation of working to earn money. We can't wait to earn what we get!

Waffles & Cooking

Working on our cooking skills is one of the highlights of our week. Each Thursday we work on reading a recipe, measuring our cooking supplies, cooking safety skills and much more. Our favorite item to cook is Waffles. We have also made cookies, brownies, and cupcakes.

Vocational Training

Vocational training is a huge component of our class. Each semester our students are enrolled in an Occupational Prep. class. During this class we focus on learning about and developing vocational skills that can be utilized after graduation. This is a large piece of the post-secondary planning each student receives. While working in our school and learning in our classroom is wonderful, getting out of our class and reporting to offsite supervisors brings a new level to out training. Each Wednesday our class will work at the Restore for approximately an hour and a half. We are excited for all that we are going to learn off campus this year.
